Pro 4:23 Keep (guard) your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life
To truly love someone means to do more than just speak words. Love is about taking action, showing care, and providing service. So when I say “I LOVE YOU” in actuality I mean “I SERVE YOU”. This service is demonstrated by at least these three key actions: TREASURE, GUARD, and NURTURE.
Let’s focus first on TREASURE. Treasuring someone means recognizing their worth and importance. In order to have a joyful marriage, it is essential to treasure your spouse. You must view your spouse as a precious and valuable part of your life and your relationship. If you neglect to treasure your spouse, you may notice a sense of distance growing between you. Accepting your spouse for who they are is crucial, as we all have a fundamental need to both give and receive love. It is vital that this act of loving (serving) your spouse is done in a way that resonates with them, rather than just yourself. True love goes beyond mere emotions; it is a commitment to care for and support your spouse. In order to treasure, “Stop loving the person you want your spouse to be, and start loving the spouse that is” (Voddie Baucham). In the next devotional we shall tackle “GUARD”.
