He Has Magnified His Word, Psalm 138:2

Giving God Priority Over Needs

1Ki 17:13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But FIRST make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son.

One reason God blesses His people is that in turn He may strengthen others’ faith by testimonies and encouragements. Elijah here was better suited to encourage the widow for he had the testimony of God’s provision for a whole year without working for it.

Elijah having understood his mission asked for some water. As she went to fetch it, he asked that he be included in the less than enough bread/cake she was going to make for her and her son. And for the meal he be first to be served. It was easier to give water, but not food, it was too little to share. The test was to boost the woman’s faith. Chick-fil-A is a quick service restaurant owned by a Christian. It is one of the most profitable restaurants with over 2,000 locations. One things if you don’t already know, they are closed on Sundays, the day when most people go out to eat. You can imagine lost revenues for closing on Sundays since 1967. To quote the owner Dan T. Cathy, “I was not so committed to financial success that I was willing to abandon my principles and priorities… Our decision to close on Sunday was our way of honoring God and of directing our attention to things that mattered more than our business.” If we seek to give God priority over our needs, we can expect Him to come through for us in those lost opportunities. If we set this as priority, God will add to us other things we ask according to for His will. God is more about changing us than changing our situations.
