Luk 12:15 And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
Ever noticed that at funeral services they never mention how rich or poor a person was but his or her character. While living, the world tends to define men’s worth by what they posses, wealth in terms of money and assets but that appears to be of less meaningful at their time of death.
In this passage a man came to Jesus requesting him to ask his brother to divide inheritance with him. The man wished to enlist Christ’s moral power to his advantage. It’s not stated if his brother had wronged him or not but that’s besides the point The Lord’s business was not to gain acres of land and money for men (earthly things) but eternal things (heavenly). It’s clear that this man’s priorities and affection were out of order. From Jesus response to him tell us something, the worth of a person is not measured by the amount that stands to his credit. It’s not what you have but who you are. That is your value in the eyes of God. Some men live to get, we should see to it that we live to be. The caution is to be aware of the coveting spirit and the need to pursue, value and have confidence in one’s accumulation. Finding your value and identity in stuff is leaning on faulty reeds and that’s not what defines you.
