Gen 22:7-8, 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” …
Isaac understood the kind of sacrifice God required perhaps reflecting on Abel. Isaac asked an important question we all should ask, where is the lamb. Many have everything but the Lamb. That is, having the money, earthly security, health and are satisfied but they don’t know that what pleases God is not anything but a lamb slain.
Even though Isaac asked, Abraham knew it. Abraham believed God would provide for himself a lamb. And we know that after he laid Isaac on the wood to slay him, a voice came told him not harm his son, and God provided a ram, a mature lamb. God’s picture here was of future event planned before the foundation of the world that Jesus would not be offered to God as baby (Lamb) but a grown man, a ram with characteristics of a lamb, humble and meek, willing to be the offerer and the offering. Abel offered to God that which came from God, a lamb and was received. Cain offered his own works off the land which God had already cursed and his offering was rejected. On the ground of Christ as the perfect Lamb are we received.
