2Ki 18:4 ..And he (Hezekiah) broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the people of Israel had made offerings to it …
God had Moses set up a bronze serpent on a pole after the Israelites sinned and God’s judgement was against them. Their hope was to look upon the bronze serpent on the pole and live. After this event, the bronze serpent was to be preserved as a memorial for them and the future generation, instead, they began to worship it.
It was wicked for Israel to burn incense and worship the bronze serpent which was only a means. Human nature perverts the means, God’s preserved word keeps us in line. God for example can use a sign to stir me up, but I cannot make that the norm, His word is sufficient. All inspiration should point us to the Word for testing and reproving because God in these last days has spoken to us by His Son (Heb 1). To hear God speak, read the word; for audible voice read the word out aloud. All helps without the word of God interrupts the exercise of faith and leads to superstition. True faith needs God’s word to build its confidence. It is not looking to and for God’s means as normative, it is turning to the word of God daily and praying.
