1Ki 17:17-20, 17 Now it happened after these things that the son of the woman who owned the house became sick. And his sickness was so serious that there was no breath left in him…20 Then he cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow with whom I lodge, by killing her son?”
The widow whose necessities were met during the severe 3 1/2 drought had the benefit of her only son’s company and that of prophet who stayed with her 2 1/2 years. Then one day before the drought ended, the companionship of her son ceased unexpectedly. The provision without companionship was devastating. Elijah took care of the supply and she handled the cooking and caring for her son and the prophet. She had strong reason to think the Lord would do her good; yet now she loses her child.
She believed God through His prophet, but even with that her faith was still weak. For God to elevate her faith, God would use a situation, the death of her son. She recognized the Lord as the only true God when she saw a miracle in her life; but now with the resurrection of her son, she had a fresh instance of it, a clear proof and demonstration of it, and more plainly, she fully grasped it. She believed the word of God was in Elijah’s mouth and was assured of it that God was greater. When was the last time you trusted God for something bigger to refresh and elevate your faith?
