Zec 4:9-10, 9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands shall also finish it. Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you. 10 For who has despised the day of small things?…
Zerubbabel led the Jews in reconstructing the ruined temple. He began small, laid foundation brick by brick. With opposition and discouragements, he could not see how small moves would bring progress. He faltered in the great work of reconstruction and practically lost heart, and for 16 years, the work was needlessly delayed. Zechariah by prophecy exhorted in order to renew his efforts and persevere to the top-stone. He was weak and deficient, but none of his deficiencies could hinder him from finishing his life-work. His spirit needed to be rekindled with the divine fire and fed by the grace of the Holy Spirit.
Great blessings often arise from small beginnings. They are like seeds with the potentials of producing much. They are effective when they are in God’s hands. That is why Zerubbabel is encouraged to take heart that it is, Zec 4:6 ”…Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the LORD of hosts.” A man’s weakness is no obstacle, for God’s might will perfect His strength in weakness. This year may have been and still very difficult for some, and all the great victories or miracles turned out to be in small drips. And perhaps like Zerubbabel you lost heart. May I encouraged us all that greatness often starts in small beginnings, Zec 4:10 “For who has despised the day of small things?” for it is not by our might or power but by His.
