Mat 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one
I struggled for a long time to understand this verse having read Jam 1:13 “Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone“. But how do we explain Mat 4:1 “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil”. God is never the agent of temptation (Jam 1:13), but here as in the book of Job God uses even satanic tempting to serve His sovereign purposes. This to say He may allow trials/temptations to serve His purposes.
It is with temptations we are tried and educated; yet we are justified in praying to our Father not to lead us into them so long as we live with childlike submission. In His loving arm is where our faith is strengthened and our spiritual life is purified and ennobled in the midst of trials/temptations. We are not to go willingly, the reason it’s a battle. The temptation itself is not sin, but we fear that we may sin through it. God provides His protection for our comfort, 1Cor 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God isfaithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it”
