Gen 22:14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
Abraham was aware of the nature and the character of God from his walk with Him for years. He saw God as merciful, giver and protector of life. After God provided a substitute in place of his son, he called the place Jehovah – jireh (The Lord will provide), probably alluding to what he had said in Gen 22:8 “God will provide himself a lamb.”
Jehovah has provided the Lamb; and in the gift of His Son we have the guarantee of eternal life and the supply of every needed blessing. The Lord sent His Holy Spirit to apply the blessings believers were afforded through His finished work purchased on the cross through His own blood. The Lord in addition will provide for the soul an eternal home, as is clear from that word, “I go to prepare a place for you.” (Joh 14). When the toils of life is over, there remains a rest for the people of God. This was purely the Lord’s doing (Psa 118:23) and it is to be recorded for the generations to come. Where God sees and provides, He should be praised.
