1Chr 16:1-36, 8 Oh, give thanks to the LORD! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples!
On this day of thanksgiving I think of a song with a portion of its lyrics, “We take a lot of things for granted, one day it all be taken away, that’s when you realize how important it was. You will never miss your water until your well runs dry, give thanks and praise all the time”. This is so true. Many of David’s psalms were full of complaints and prayers but David often acknowledged the faithfulness of God and turned his blessings into praise and thanksgiving.
How often do we give thanks? Are there things we take for granted? I think of a small sample list of things that we rarely think about, acknowledge and give thanks. When was the last time you thanked God for the air you breath, eyes to see, taste, smell, internal organs, walk, work etc? Thanksgiving as David paints is the display of the greatness of God’s name by making known His deeds among the people. They are testimonies of God’s abilities and faithfulness. In order to maintain a heart of gratitude, a day in a week should be set a side to express gratitude to God for His greatness. And if you want to know how God cares about this, begin to praise and give thanks and you will be amazed at how He brings to memory the many blessings He has brought into your life today, yesterday, last week, last year, over the years. Count your blessings one by one and you will be amazed what God has done.
