Mat 4:5-6, 5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, …6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: and, ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
Another subtle way satan works is to tempt us with presumption (a behavior perceived as transgressing the limits of what is permitted or appropriate). We see Satan take Jesus to the holy city, once again questioning His Sonship on the grounds of misusing God’s provision and ability to advance self.
Think of a pastor who presumptuously took Mark 16:18, “they will take up serpents; …, it will by no means hurt them; …” to handle a snake that later killed him. He foolishly used this vs to put God to test. This is outrageous, but how many run to conferences for a zap, or give away all their money foolishly for double or triple from God. The sick ceasing to use medicine because a faith healer promised them healing. This is like saying, “you jump and God will send His angels to catch you” and He does, but should believers abuse the provision of God to test His abilities?
Satan in religious terms tempted Jesus with all high slippery places; advancements in the world that makes men easy target for Satan. As a rule, the greater the desire the greater the temptation.
