Gen 37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also, he made him a tunic (coat, robe) of many colors
Israel (Jacob) loved Joseph more than all his children. He was the firstborn of his beloved Rachel and a son of his old age. He made him a coat of many colors which in my judgment was symbolic. He was a type of Christ as with Joshua and others in the OT. His brothers who hated him later stripped of his coat and sold him to Egypt as a slave. In Egypt after many struggles and challenges, he was elevated as the 2nd man in command. Pharaoh had this message for him Gen 41:41-42, “41…See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” 42… and clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck” The significance of the original coat would be displayed in his services in Egypt. He served all without discrimination of race, color, class, gender etc.
In salvation we received Christ, the coat of many colors and the covering He had is accessible to us for His service, Acts 10:38, “... God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” Jesus and Joseph were endowed with power from on high to be effective in serving, God was with them. Prayer brings us under His covering; and just as the paint covers the surface when applied, the blood of Jesus has covered us and made us effective for His service for God is with us. Isa 61:10 “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,…”
