1Chr 28:9-10, 9 As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; … If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever. …
In these words we have beautifully exemplified to us the anxiety of a truly believing parent whose aim was to provide more than material things, but labor for the spiritual of his son. David not only prepared materials, he also prepared Solomon spiritually. Parents whose goals for their kids is just success in life (financially, family, health) without spiritual life are doing them a great disservice. Solomon’s great responsibility, a charge from God through his father called for walking, blessings and working with God.
Though David was not a perfect father, the bible highlights his faith, a foundation and legacy he was passing to his son by teaching him to serve and trust in the Lord as He did. Paul in Gal 4:19 speaks as a parent both with authority and most tender sympathy to the believers in Galatia he referred to as “my little children”. His goal was to labor till Christ was formed in their hearts which meant that until they had the mind of Christ and walked in His statutes. This was not a responsibility he could pass to anyone as we see David with Solomon. The primary responsibility of discipling the children is in the hands of the parents. The church is to equip them to do their job and works along side of them.
