2Ti 1:13-14, 13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
It was important for Timothy to have sound words to sink his teeth on and not let go. It was to be done in faith and love found in Christ Jesus. In short, Paul was reminding him that doctrine matters especially when rightly understood and rightly applied. The apostle would remind him of his first in 1Tim 3:14-16, that Jesus is the ground and pillar for the truth. These 6 truths he was to guard and hold on to them, 1. God was manifested in the flesh, 2. He was Justified in the Spirit, 3. Seen by angels, 4. Preached among the Gentiles, 5. Believed on in the world, 6. Received up in glory. (1Tim 3:14-16).
The life and the hope for our calling rests on truth. This is the means to overcome the lies, fears, confusion the enemy brings our way. Jesus’ in the wilderness used the truth of the word as the final authority to counter attack the lies of Satan. Paul had already written before ”Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” (1Ti 4:16), and the benefits, ”For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2Pe 1:8).
