Luke 9:1-6, 3 And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece. 4 “Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.
This passage is the first sending of the disciples on missions. At the beginning Jesus gives them power and authority over demons and power to cure diseases but no more. He sends them to preach and heal. He instructs them not to take anything for the journey. It is clear that they could afford a staff of a shepherd, bag, bread, money, clothing. They were sent out without provision of materials only spiritual. Nothing was to distract them from the great object of heralding the kingdom of God. The houses they would stop and minister at, food would be provided, clothing and money if needed.
This reminds us that Christ would not have His disciples shy of receiving the kindnesses of their friends, but rather to expect them. The Lord from the beginning ordained that ministers that serve should benefit from their ministries (the Levites). That where they sow, they should also reap. 1Ti 5:17-18, “17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine 18 For the Scripture says, “you shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, “the laborer is worthy of his wages.” Jesus shows us that the kingdom matters is the priority, (Mat 6:33). The necessities have been provided for mainly through the receivers of the message as we faithfully serve.
