1Pe 1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, … though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ
Genuine faith tested is preserved through fire for our joy. But as Peter says, various trials may be for a little while which can easily discourage believers. Those prolonged times in the fire fight against hope. Greater testimony is not in the achievement but in endurance. These men speak from experience as seasoned endured soldiers.
Deeper joy from the Lord surfaces and becomes believers strength when we learn to profit even in and from trials, “the joy of the Lord is our strength”. Churches in Macedonia turned trials into joy and poverty into generosity. Paul gives their testimony “Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality” (2Cor 8:1).
