Jos 24:13-14, 13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant. 14 “Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth …”
Joshua reminds Israel in the final 2 chapters of the Lord’s faithfulness and accomplishments for them. His aim was to draw Israel’s attention to God’s resume in order to encourage them to continue to look to Him and not man. It was not theirs hands that delivered them from Egypt or that led them through the wilderness or gave them victory over their enemies or even gave them the land, it was purely by the hands of God. God promised, and God delivered.
Joshua as a warrior learned the secret of trusting in God rather than his sword or man in the days of Moses. He reminds his people that “ …it was not by your sword or by your bow.” (Jos 24:12) that victory was won but by trusting God. The application of this history of God’s mercies to them is by way of exhorting Israel to continue to fear, serve and trust God. Psa 40:4 “Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust…”
