Rom 1:1-5, 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, … 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ Our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace…for the sake of his name among all the nations
Paul here introduces us to the author/source of the gospel, God designed and revealed it. This gospel was proclaimed before time before Paul and others or in the NT ever proclaimed it. And this gospel is fully grounded in scripture. In vs. 3 he tells us who the subject of the gospel is, it is concerning His Son (The person, provision, work of Christ). And in vs. 4 he reveals who the Son is, Jesus Christ our Lord. JESUS is His saving name, Jehovah saves; CHRIST is His strong name, the anointed One; Our LORD is His sovereign name. Man is not mentioned until in vs 5.
These first few vs help us to understand that the gospel does not begin with God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life, no, It begins with God loved His Son Jesus and had a wonderful plan for His life. We are not the main character in the gospel, Jesus is. We according to vs 5 have received grace for the sake of His name. We are the recipients of the obedience of Christ who fulfilled the call of His Father, and Father exalted His Son who fulfilled the promise. This is humbling.
