1Ti 5:23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities.
It is clear from Paul’s letter that Timothy was facing various trials while serving the Lord. As a young pastor, he was dealing with stress, timidity, and bodily ailments. As he gives him instructions concerning managing the church, he injects this verse for his personal benefit.
Paul already warned against drunkenness and leadership associated with wine. Here he advices Timothy to take a little wine instead of water for his stomach. There is a possibility that Luke the physician traveling with Paul shared this useful information with Paul, and he passed it to Timothy. Paul a miracle worker could not heal him, but as a good physician provided much needed remedy to improve his health in order to live longer and serve effectively. It is God’s will to take all proper means to raise bodily condition above infirmities through exercise, eating right, seeking medical attention. God has provided many means for the preservation of one’s health. It is unwise to deny self of God given remedies because you think it works against faith. Think of lives cut short because traditions and stubbornness stood in the way. God is to be acknowledged in the creating of things useful for man. He is also to be acknowledged in using men to discover their usefulness. God has a lot of ways of accomplishing that which He purposes and concerns us today.
