Gen 22:2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Christ. While it is considered a birthday for our Savior, He gave to us Himself as a gift. This was planned before the foundation of the world with events as foreshadows throughout the Old Testament.
One of the greatest foreshadow pictures of God giving His Son for our salvation is seeen with Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac. Abraham had another son Ishmael, God says, not Ishmael or the servants, or abundant of his flock but his son, the son he waited 25 years for. It could have been a little easier to give up anyone but Isaac. How willingly would Abraham have parted with them by thousands to redeem Isaac. And the call was not to surrender him to serve in the temple like Samuel, but to have him dead by his own hands. It was a trial of Abraham’s love to God, and therefore it must be of a beloved son. Here is a picture of Our Heavenly Father’s love who put His Son, the One He loves, His only begotten Son on the line to die for our sins. His Son was too willing to come and die. He could have given up one of the angels or prophets, but not so, He saved the best for last. “For God so loved the world that He gave…” (Joh 3:16), His very best for our salvation.
