Psa 115:1-3, 1 Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, But to Your name give glory, Because of Your mercy, Because of Your truth. 2 Why should the Gentiles say, “So where is their God?” …
In the former psalm, the past wonders were counted and credited to God in honor. The psalmist here is entreating the Lord to glorify Himself again. The heathen presuming upon the absence of material blessings at some point asked, “Where is now their God?” It grieved the heart of the godly that God was not given honor due to Him, and they beseeched Him to vindicate His own name.
David in Psa 23:4 pleads with the Lord to lead him in His path of righteousness for His name sake. We also see it with Joshua with such a great concern for God’s great name having been defeated in Ai. He made his plea to God, “…For the Canaanites … will hear it, and surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name? ” (Jos 7:9). For God’s glory, Moses pleaded with God not to destroy Israel (Exo 32:12).The common theme with these men, “the glory of God”. They were not to trying to make a deal with God to gain something from Him, but for God to make much of Himself by blessing them. This is the ground by which I pray for my marriage, health, finances, families, ministries, it is all to make God’s name famous before His people and especially the heathens.
