Jos 1:5...Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.
Joshua’s covering and blessings as with the Israelites was under the umbrella of Moses, God’s servant, the mediator for Israel to bring them to the promised land. In Exo 17, Joshua’s victory battle against Amalek is credited to Moses’ prayer, “Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.” (Exo 17:11) Moses was now dead, the man that led the Israelites out of Egypt (Jos 1:2). He seemed to have taken the covering with him but God’s plans were not defeated, He had Joshua in mind to fulfill His promises.
Joshua name means “Jehovah saves”, a picture of Christ. Moses who represented the law could only take Israel so far but not to the promised land, he became angry and sinned.
A similar picture is that we were all under the umbrella of Adam’s blessing but his sin brought death to us all. The last Adam (Christ) was God’s plan to save us even before the original Adam sinned. It is more clear that God never intended for Moses to bring the Israelites to the promised land. And here is why, Rom 8:3 “For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: …”, Gal 3:24, “So then, the law (Moses) was our guardian until Christ (Joshua) came, in order that we might be justified by faith.”
Believers under Joshua have the comfort of being under a new covenant (covering) to lead them to the promised land heaven. “…in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, …” (2Co 5:19). God in Christ is with us who are in Christ, “Christ in us the hope of glory”
