Joh 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world… (a)
Christ in person and through Apostle Paul brings to light what He means in this verse. First He didn’t have to condemn, the world was condemned already (vs.18) He only revealed how. Think of this analogy, imagine a lady wipes her table clean. Not long after, she opens the curtains to let in the morning sunlight. To her horror she sees dust on the table she just cleaned. Did the light create dust? No, it exposed what she could not see without the aid of the light. This is what Jesus did especially with the Sermon on the Mount. He drew back the curtain that the light of His righteousness would shine in the hearts of men as He expounded on the law. He did not revise the laws; He explained and expounded on them “you have heard it said, but I say…” (Mat 5-7).
The Jews thought they had kept the laws (their tables were clean) until the Lord drew the curtains to expose their heart condition. Listen to what He says, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Mat 5:17). Only Christ could fulfil the demands of the law for us. “The law giver was the law keeper that He may justify the law breakers” (Paris Reidhead)
