Dan 6:1–3, 3 Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm.
Daniel served at least 3 kings from his younger years in Babylon with his friends Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. As young men, “…God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams” (Dan 1:17). Now as an older man, he was still serving in a new position as a governor of governors. His main job was “loss prevention” for he was a man of excellent character (faithful).
God gave him learning abilities but character which is not a gift was developed in the light of what was given. Skills opened doors, character (faithfulness) kept many doors opened. Character made him stand out from the rest. When a person possesses good character (integrity, honesty, loyalty, accountability, self-sacrifice, self control etc), it can be observed through their living. In our day we see more skills and less character with work, ministry, among our young people etc. Character will take and keep you in places your skills falls short of. “Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” (1Cor 4:2).
