The night before His crucifixion, Jesus was exceedingly sorrowful unto death as He contemplated the coming wrath and justice of God which would fall upon Him as He died for His people. So great was His agony that His sweat was as great drops of blood (Matt 26:38). The disciples who He hoped would watch with Him in prayers even for 1 hour, 3 times He found them asleep. But even in His sorrows, He addressed His disciples with gentleness knowing where they were spiritually and physically.
The disciples of Christ may face sadness (sorrowful) as Christ did, but by the grace of God, they will keep their emotions in check just like Jesus did. I have seen hurt people hurt others. The 2 men spoke with civility to the stranger that joined them. Their speech exalted Jesus even in their sadness. Christ who inquired of the current affairs first examined what they knew before He would teach them what they were lacking. This kind of question addresses what we believe, what we hoped, and our disappointments. Jesus knows when the spirit is willing and the flesh is weak and knows how to stabilize lives (Matt 26:41).
