Jos 1:9 …Be strong and courageous ; …, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
In life, company is vital for encouragement, help and companionship. At times help or encouragement may not be priority as someone’s presence. In my experience, a terrified child easily calms down at the presence of a parent. This is often enough to overcome their fear. As believers the best encouragements and help are experienced through assurance of God’s presence in trouble especially where answers may be lacking.
In Joshua’s case, Moses’ presence that had made him feel strong and courageous in fighting battles was gone. God’s word to him, “be strong and courageous for I am with you”. God was not giving Joshua new weapons or battle plans, peace and confidences would come through the knowledge of God’s promised presence, (Jos 1:5, 9, 17). God’s presence is a shield strong enough to take away fear and provide courage to go forward. Gen 15:1 “After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”
