Eph 1:13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit
The problems in marriages can be traced to the lack of gospel application. The gospel is a dynamite, it blasts away selfishness, self righteousness, self complacency, self-delusion and sinful self reliance we all struggle with. By the Gospel the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts through the promised Holy Spirit to combat our struggles (Rom 5:5).
Through the gospel, the Holy Spirit opens the souls of believers to a fountain of spiritual life that ought to impact every aspect of our marriages. The vertical relationship with Christ brought about by the gospel is the means by which we develop the horizontal relationships, and the Holy Spirit continues the work of sanctification that leads to much fruit bearing. Gal 5:22-25, “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness. 23 gentleness, self-control;… 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”
