2Ki 5:15-16, 15 Then he (Naaman) returned to the man of God (Elisha), …And he said, “Behold, I know that there is no God in all the earth but in Israel; so accept now a present from your servant.” 16 But he said, “As the LORD lives, before whom I stand, I will receive none.” And he urged him to take it, but he refused.”
Prophets lived on gifts from blessings others, Elisha here declines to accept this big gift offered without asking or demanding. Elisha would have not been out of line to receive a gift from Naaman, perhaps the biggest gift a prophet could have ever received. Naaman needed to understand his healing was a gift not to be paid back. And Elisha would not abuse his office for personal gain, he sacrificed for a greater good.
He who has learned the secret of contentment sees the bigger picture for “…godliness with contentment is great gain”(1Ti 6:6). In true godliness, traits of contentment will be seen. It makes us content with what we have, and it opens to us stores of blessedness which the wealth of this world cannot buy. Let us leave the provision for our needs with God.
