Mat 22:1-14, 11 But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless.
Jesus’ parable presents a king who gave a wedding feast to his son. The servants were asked call those guests invited by the king to this wedding but they refused even after elaborating of what was to be expected. He therefore extended the invitation to whosoever wills to come, and the palace was filled. He then noticed a guest in no wedding robe/attire. It was a custom in the East for the host to present his guests with robes of honor for the occasion. The man may have refused the king’s robe perhaps with the thought that his usual attire was good enough. Every saint is clothed, they put on Jesus Christ by faith as their garment of righteousness (Rom 13:14). He is the only reason they can come and be accepted.
To be without the wedding garments, offered freely, implies works righteousness which condemns. Your hope and mine is trustful obedience to the Savior, the righteous robe for the wedding lest we are bound and cast out as this man for coming on our own robe on judgment day.
