1Ki 3:24-25, 24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. 25 And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to one, and half to the other.”
Solomon, having patiently heard what both sides had to make a ruling. It seemed impossible to arrive at any decision while the court was held in suspense. The case had no lawyers, witnesses, or evidence. All he had is what they said. While the people waited for a brilliant deliberation, well thought and executed judgement, Solomon asked for a sword and commanded the child to be divided into two, and each woman to take half.
This seemed a ridiculous rushed decision of the case and a mockery of justice. A man of wisdom and that of God appeared to have failed in his first attempt to render justice. Of course we know he ordered this, to try the affections of the women, and thereby come to the true knowledge of the affair.
Solomon a picture of God on the throne is good and just. He has perfect plans even in the midst of us feeling like He has failed to execute proper judgement. Abraham in Gen 18:25 was horrified that God would destroy both the righteous and the wicked. Take note of his words to God, “Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, … Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” Abraham would only understand the doings of God much later. God is a brilliant judge to be trusted even when what he allows seem to put more lives in danger.
