Rom 12:3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
The truth that grace (unmerited favor) is bestowed upon us should serve as a reminder that it is a gift to be cherished with humility for “…What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?” (1Co 4:7). These gifts are not for self elevation but a means to serve others for God’s glory. This is only possible when sober mind/judgement is employed from a renewed mind.
How we act is influenced by how we think, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…”(Pro 23:7). Sober thinking influenced by the Word ignites faith. Faith is here viewed as the inlet to all of the other graces, and so, as the receptive faculty of the renewed soul – that is, God has given to each his particular capacity to take in the gifts and graces which He designs for the general good. We each therefore should strive to run in our God given lane as we trust Him to unfold more of what He wants to do in our lives in yielding to His call. It is all grace based.
