Eph 4:8-10, 8 Therefore it says,“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”
Paul quotes here Psa 68:18-19. Christ first descended to earth, lived, died, resurrected and ascended. When He ascended, He led that which held us captive (sin), into captivity (defeated it). It is for freedom that Christ has set us free, no longer to be subjects to the yoke of slavery. He freed us from the grips and slavery of sins then gave us gifts.
The truth that grace (unmerited favor) is bestowed upon the undeserving should serve as a reminder that it is a gift to be cherished with humility for “…What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?“, 1Co 4:7.
These gifts are not for self elevation but a means to serve others for God’s glory. This is only possible when sober mind/judgement is employed from a renewed mind.
Faith is viewed as the inlet to all of the other graces, and so, as the receptive faculty of the renewed soul. God has given to each his particular capacity to take in the gifts and graces which He designed for the general good of others.
