The call of Jeremiah is one amongst the foremost fascinating reads in the Bible, and that is because many of us identify with him in response to God’s call. He came from the line of priests but what makes his calling unique is that he was more than a priest. He received his calling when he was very young, having been set apart in the womb to the office of a prophet.

The chapter opens with words of Jeremiah before continuing to detail his call. Jeremiah’s name signifies one raised up by the Lord. The words of Jeremiah are the words of the Lord, which were put into his mouth, and he delivered under divine inspiration. It is said of Christ that he is a prophet whom the Lord our God raised up unto us.

What we shall glean from this chapter is that God has a distinct purpose for each life, and our one aim should be to discover and work out His plan. God has not called able men, He has called available men. And these prophets were just ordinary men like we all are with limitations and struggles like we all do, yet they still answered the call. James in assuring believers provides an example of Elijah “17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.” (Jas 5:17-18). The journey of discovery begins with availability despite limitations. God’s abilities are manifested in our availability as weak people.
