Heb 6:13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, “surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.”
God’s spoken promises are good and adequate to take to the bank. His word says in Num 23:19, “God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” God, as in this verse, did not have to say more to prove Himself, but here to Abraham He:
1. Promises, which is good enough.
2. Then swears by Himself.
3. Adds the word “surely” in His promises to Abraham.
This was God’s 3-way witness to Abraham to supply him with abundant encouragement. No stronger promise could be made than that great promise which God made to Abraham and, in him, to us. The willingness of God to go the extra mile in order to strengthen the weakness of man puts more confidence in an oath that cements the word. Picture a child holding onto a branch, the father encourages him to let go of the branch knowing that he will catch him. The father promises, he gives his own oath, and adds “surely” to strengthen his child’s faith to trust him. God has given us His promises through His Word that we might trust Him now, more than ever, in tough times like these. He knows and sees where we are and wants to lavish His blessings upon His children (Eph 3:20, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us”).
