Eph 3:17-18, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length
There are three meaningful words in vs 17, dwell, rooted and grounded. To DWELL is to live or reside, Christ by faith dwells in us permanently. Just as oil dwells in the engine, Christ by the Holy Spirit fills us for our strength and preservation from the corrupt world.
To be ROOTED is to be very strong and firmly fixed. Roots are the part of a plant that attaches itself to the ground or to a support, typically underground. They convey water and nourishment to the rest of the plant via numerous branches and fibers. We know not love unless Christ dwells in our hearts by faith and we be grounded in His love to blossom.
GROUNDED is someone or something stable, sincere, practical or firmly established. Our love for God and our fellow men must be grounded, sincere, stable but only in the renewing of the Lord. It is by the preservation of the inner man can we have the possibility and capacity to love.
The indwelling of Christ means that we shall be empowered, rooted and grounded in love. Christ is the source of that spiritual strength which through faith is communicated to all His people.
