Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Paul in this verse is positioning himself to address unity by first declaring that all men are created in the image of God (born) and we are recreated (born again) in Christ Jesus. We are God’s handiwork in both times and God deserves our praise, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.” (Psa 139:14)
The aspect of touch is very important here. God did not speak man into existence. He created by touching and forming. Jeremiah 18 gives a clear picture of the potter and the clay. God tells Jeremiah to go down to the potter’s house, “3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something at the wheel. 4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make.”, (Jer 18:3-4). The contrast between what the clay was, and the vessel it became, is credited to the skillful master’s plan and the touch of the potter in forming it.
The fact that we are created in Christ gives our lives meaning. The vessel’s worth is controlled by its substance. It is God who saved us. As new creatures, He remade us through the gospel and this gospel transcends race, class, gender, color. We are not saved by works but we are His workmanship, created unto good works, designed henceforth to abound in them.
